Exam anxiety support · Knutsford, Cheshire
Walk into the exam hall steady, not spinning.
Racing thoughts. A blank mind the moment the paper turns over. Weeks of dread before a single exam has started. Hypnotherapy helps the body and mind unlearn that pattern, so preparation actually shows up on the day.

What exam anxiety actually looks like
It's not "just nerves"
Exam anxiety shows up in the body as much as in the mind, often long before revision starts, and it doesn't respond to being told to calm down or try harder.
In the body
- Racing heart, tight chest
- Nausea or stomach upset
- Disrupted sleep before exams
- Shaking hands, sweating
In the mind
- Mind going blank under pressure
- Catastrophic "what if I fail" thoughts
- Trouble concentrating while revising
- Comparing and worrying about others
In behaviour
- Procrastinating on revision
- Avoiding practice papers or mocks
- Irritability or tearfulness at home
- Wanting to skip the exam entirely
The approach
Working with the body, not just the thoughts
Most exam anxiety isn't a knowledge problem. It's a nervous system that has learned to treat exams as a threat, so it responds the way it would to any threat: heart racing, thoughts scattering, the mind going blank exactly when it's needed most.
My approach centres on embodied regulation, teaching the body how to recognise pressure without spiralling into panic, so calm and focus become the default state to return to, not something to white-knuckle your way toward.
Sessions combine solution-focused hypnotherapy with practical tools your child, or you, can use independently, in the exam hall itself and in the weeks of revision beforehand.

Questions
Before you book
What age is this suitable for?
Most clients are teenagers preparing for GCSEs or A-levels, though the same approach works well for university exams and professional qualifications too. Get in touch if you're unsure whether it's a fit.
Will my child need to talk about things they'd rather not?
No. Sessions focus on what's working and what a calmer exam experience would look like, not on dwelling on past failures or difficult experiences in detail.
How soon before exams should we start?
Four to six weeks allows time for the work to settle in before exam day. That said, even a single session closer to the date can help.
Is this instead of revision support, or alongside it?
Alongside. Hypnotherapy works on the anxiety response so existing revision and knowledge can be accessed under pressure. It isn't a substitute for studying the material itself.
How does it work with a teenager? Do I stay in the room?
For under-16s I ask a parent or guardian to be present for the first session, and to give consent before we begin. After that, many young people prefer to work one to one, and I'm happy either way. Whatever we agree, I'll always tell you what we're working on and how it's going. I won't share the detail of what your child says to me unless I have a safeguarding concern, in which case I'd tell you what I'm doing and why.
